Bok Choi, a Special Boy

11/14/08 - by TheCatCoach

One of my Bengals, Bok Choi was diagnosed last night with a large tumor in his lower intestine. He is very sick, the tumor is fast growing. I’m very sad. Bok Choi had a very rough life, was dealt a bad genetic hand, has HCM, disintegrating spine along with some other disorders and to top it off, the previous owner had him 4 pawed declawed and abused him.

Bok Choi is my special boy. Through the years he’s lived with me, he’s been my teacher. I know that sounds a little odd, but he has had just about every behavior problem known and unknown to cat. He has taught me to think out of the box and look at creative solutions. He’s a wonderful boy, I love him dearly and he will be so missed by me and his best buddy Kingsley.

My veterinarian doesn’t think it’s his time yet, but it’s soon. He’s now home, so he can enjoy his last few days with his best friend.

You can see a picture of him in my blog entry about Bengals and litter boxes.

  6. Marilyn, I'm so sorry to learn of Bok Choi's condition. I've read about him on BCR and know how special he is to you and how special you are to him. Please know that my thoughts are with you at this hard time. Bok Choi knows how much he is loved, and that is the most important thing. You made, and continue to make, a difference in his life. My words are clumsy and inadequate, but I hope they help a little.

  7. Ive read about him on the BCR posts - I am so sorry for you and him but at least he gets to be with you, and not alone, as he nears the end. I'll give my guys extra hugs & cuddles tonight......

  8. sigh. I'm very sorry. I don't know what to say. I live in fear of the day I will have to do something like that but I can't imagine life without my darling LaMie and I am sure you must feel the same. I am sending my thoughts and hopes to you.

    Extra catnip is in order.

  9. That is so sad! That kitty sounds like he had a life of ordeal before meeting you. It is so good that he can be with you still for a while and enjoy the rest of what little nice time he has had in his life.

  10. I'm so very sorry..I've been in those shoes before, and it's just so hard.
I'll be keeping you and Bok in my thoughts.

  11. first i want to say, bok choi is a brilliant name.

second, i think it's lovely that bok was able to find you after leading such a hard life. you've made a difference and that is something to be proud of.

my words are inadequate, but know bok choi, Kingsley and you are in my prayers.

  12. Marilyn my prayers and thoughts are with you and Bok Chio. He's so lucky to have you taking such good care of him and for the life you've given him.

  13. Marilyn, after reading so many of your wonderful pieces of Bengal advice and wondering about actually having one, I finally was blessed Thursday evening with a foster child Sierra Leone. I was shocked, she looks exactly like Bok Choi !

Well, at least from what I can tell looking under at her the bed - still.

It is the perpetual circle of life: one comes in, another leaves. "To everything, there is a Season." Remembering the good things always helps us adjust to the loss of a loved one - and a really really "good thing" to treasure about Bok Choi will be that he didn't just teach you: he taught "The Teacher". For, through his experiences with you, he will live on over and over every time you help one of us (over and over LOL ) understand the Bengal mind. His soul will continue to be among us forever, radiating ever outward like the expanding ripple in a pool.

Or more like in the sink when he knocked something into it ! !

  14. Marilyn-

My heart goes out to you...it's horrible when one of our fuzzies is ill, and you're doing everything you can to comfort them and make them feel comfortable. As it's been stated, he's such a lucky boy to have someone as generous and understanding and patient as you. Any other person might have handed him off to someone else in light of his heath and behavioral problems.

    *rubs Bok Choi's ear*

Thanks for sharing you life with us.

  15. Marilyn,
Our thoughts are with you and Bok Choi. We love all our pets but sometimes there is one that just touches our hearts in an extra special way. Through all the sadness and heartache realize that you were both lucky to have each other. Almost 3 years ago I lost my rottweiler Sunny to cancer and although the tears still come sometimes more and more of the time is spent remembering the special times we had together. I know you and Bok Choi had many. I hope his final time, however long or short it may be, is peaceful and he leaves feeling lucky, spoiled and loved.

  16. Marilyn,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I know this is devasting news. Think about the special times and the bond between you two. Remember that he had a great time with you and all you did for each other. When his time comes to leave, it will be in that time in his life when he was safe, loved, admired, and cherished. God arranges special animals to be with special people at just the right times.

  17. Oh Marilyn,
My heart goes out to you, Bok Choi, and your other cats. It's not fun to think about life without a special cat, but you love each other and I'm sure he's as grateful he found you as you are. Cherish and enjoy the time you have together. I hope you are able to make his final days be comfortable and full of love.
